Demetrius ArmstrongCoach D began swimming for fun at the age of 7, and has loved swimming every since. He did not start swimming competitive until spring of his 11th grade year at Firestone High School. While in a Business Law class, the High School swim coach challenged everyone to come out and attempt to complete one of his practices for extra credit. Coach D was the only one to accept the challenge, and after practice Coach Mike Wilcox (FHS) stated to Coach D see you tomorrow! Coach D laughed and mentioned he was a basketball player not a swimmer. After a conversation between Coach Wilcox and Coach D’s mother, he was at practice the next day (mother knows best---or else!!). Over the summer, Coach D learned how to swim Butterfly. In his senior year, he went on to compete in the 100 Fly, 50 Free and 100 Free. After his senior year, he went on to compete at Hiram College. For the next three years, he made it to the Conference finals in the Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle. He also earned Hardest Worker Award and Most Improved. After tearing ligaments in his shoulder playing Rugby, Coach D was not able to swim his senior year.
